The Cygnet® Flexible Clamps from Peters Surgical are designed to provide precise and reliable vascular control during various surgical procedures. These clamps offer a range of jaw orientations and configurations, making them versatile tools for surgeons. This article outlines the setup process for Cygnet® Flexible Clamps, detailing the features of the jaws, inserts, ratchet, and shaft, along with step-by-step instructions for their assembly and use.

1. The Jaws

Peters Surgical’s Cygnet® Flexible Clamps come with a wide variety of jaw orientations to suit different surgical needs:

  • 86mm Jaws: Suitable for standard vascular procedures.
  • 66mm Jaws: Designed specifically for mini thoracotomy, available in straight and curved styles.
  • Lambert-Kay Jaws: Designed for partial occlusion.
  • 33mm Jaws: Designed for pediatric and peripheral vascular procedures.

2. Positioning

When the rigid position provides accurate placement on the aorta, essential for precise vascular control, the flexible position is designed to create optimal space in the surgical field, enhancing accessibility and maneuverability.

3. Inserts Track

Peters Surgical Intrack® Insert sets are designed to enhance the functionality of Cygnet® Clamps. These inserts offer a secure fit and superior performance :

  • They locks securely in jaws
  • They are atraumatic to minimize tissue damage
  • They conforms to the vessel shape
  • They provides superior traction

Intrack® Inserts are compatible with both Cygnet® Clamps and Intrack® peripheral vascular and aortic clamps. Ultra Inserts are recommended with Cygnet® clamps.

4. Loading Sterile Inserts

To ensure the inserts are correctly loaded and secured, follow these steps:

  • Identify the Tip: Locate the more rounded narrow tip of the insert.
  • Insert the Tip: Insert the rounded tip into the front of the jaw.
  • Slide and Lock: Slide the insert completely into the jaw and pinch the tip to lock it in place.
  • Secure: Ensure the squared end of the insert locks into the tip of the jaw and check for security.

5. Insert Removal

Removing the inserts is a simple process:

  • Pull: Pull the tip of the jaw towards the other jaw to slide the insert out.
  • Discard: Discard used inserts appropriately.
  • Close Jaws: Close the jaws and engage the ratchet.

6. The Ratchet

The ratchet mechanism of the Cygnet® Flexible Clamps provides controlled clamping pressure and easy release mechanisms:

  • Thumb and forefinger ratchet release mechanisms
  • One manual release at the base

To release the ratchet, squeeze the handles while engaging the release buttons.

7. The Shaft

The flexible shaft of the Cygnet® clamps offers versatility and ease of use:

  • Exposure and Release:
    • Firmly pull back on the rigid shaft to release the connection near the jaws.
    • The shaft can be retracted from outside the incision for easy adjustment.
  • Connection to Box Lock:
    • Ensure the connection is aligned correctly.
    • Flat sides of the shaft need to align for proper retraction and secure connection.
